Know Before You Go: About Denton
Denton's a small north Texas city with the youthful vibe of a college town
Groups gather here for the charm, culture and creativity of this historic little city, like the many concerts, Arts and Jazz Festival, and huge Shiloh Field Community Garden—the largest community garden in the entire country. Explore Denton's history as you stroll the town center, through many of the city’s highlights and its Texas attractions.
Cowboys and Culture
Western lore and the modern world intersect in Denton. Dive into both during your stay. If you're in town in August, whoop it up at the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, where steers unseat cowboys and the best pigs get trophies. A ticket to the fair also buys you admission to the nightly free concerts featuring the best of Texas country music. Spend a day adventuring into the historic Courthouse on the Square area of town, shopping and sampling live music, art galleries and ice cream. Discover new and the noted art at the Lightwell Gallery and the North Art Gallery at the University of North Texas, then catch a performance at the Denton Community Theater.
Some Like It Hot
If you like hot weather, you'll love Denton during the warm season of June through mid-September. You're likely to get many days where the thermometer climbs above 90, and at times into triple-digit weather. It's also wet—the area doesn't have a dry season—so that makes it humid. December, January and February are chillier, and temps stay in the 33 to 56 degree range. Plan your get-together for April to May or September to October for the best weather.
Education and Airports Fuel the Economy
Denton's a lively little town for its size, largely thanks to its universities—University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University—with their 40,000 students. The universities also provide numerous local jobs. If you fly into the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on your way to your Denton get-together, you'll have a shorter taxi ride than you would to either of the named cities, so it's no surprise that the airport also employs many Denton locals. Others work in service industries, including finance, manufacturing and retail.
Moving and Grooving in Denton
Fly into either Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) or Love Field Airport in Dallas, and it's an easy ride on public transportation into town. Alternatively, zip down Highway 35—east from Dallas, west from Fort Worth—to arrive by car. Once you're in town, you can hop on a public bus or commuter rail to get around, but you may find it more convenient to keep the car during your stay.
