Music Lover's Guide to Knoxville
Knoxville is a live music mecca where tomorrow's country stars croon on street corners while bluegrass tunes and jazz riffs play in honky-tonks
You can fill an entire weekend with live music if you know where to find it. Here are some of the top places to go in Knoxville.
Scout Big Theaters
To find toe-tapping live music in Knoxville, start by comparing the schedules of the top venues. The Bijou Theatre is one of Knoxville's most storied buildings. This intimate space was first opened in 1909 and is—like all good old buildings—possibly haunted. The Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville also has historical charm with its domed ceiling and colorful frescoes. It hosts Broadway plays and performances by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and nationally known musicians. Alternative and metal groups play at the International, and the Clayton Center for the Arts in nearby Maryville hosts jazz, big-band and folk musicians.
Scope Out Unusual Spots
Go beyond the major music venues to find performances in surprising places. The Knoxville Museum of Art hosts a weekly summertime music series featuring an eclectic list of performers. WDVX, a community radio station, broadcasts live musical performances from its studio in the Knoxville Visitors Center, and you can sit in the audience for free. Or, get a double dose of culture by listening to live classical music at a local library. A string quartet from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra regularly performs shows aimed at preschoolers and their parents, and the KSO puts on other community performances too.
Hit the Streets
Wander Market Square with cash in your pockets to tip the street musicians. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the summer, the area is bursting with live performances. Head into a pub for a drink and some more live tunes. Boyd's Jig & Reel hosts weekly performances of bluegrass, jazz and folk music. After you take a sip of some liquid courage, grab an instrument and join in on the jam session. Knoxville is also home to a number of music festivals, including the multi-media Big Ears event and the Rhythm N' Blooms Festival.
Folly Dolly Out of Town
If you get this close to Dollywood and don't visit, you can hardly call yourself a music lover. The theme park is about 35 miles southeast of Knoxville, so there’s no reason not to make a day trip. You can hear live gospel, country tunes and classic jukebox numbers performed live throughout the park. Nearby in Pigeon Forge, you can see a stage show at the Country Tonite Theatre or The Smoky Mountain Opry, or take your pick of other dinner shows in the area.
