Is There More to Pittsburgh Than Sports Teams? The Answer is Yes!
There’s more to the Steel City than football—from arts and culture to wild rides and funky exhibits
Satisfy your inner thrill seeker with a day at Kennywood park.
When it comes to professional sports and their passionate fan base, Pittsburgh has earned its nickname, the City of Champions. It’s three professional sports teams—the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates—boast 16 championships.
But the Steel City is also home to a diverse collection of world-class establishments. Whether you’re planning a day trip or staying for a week, add these Pittsburgh attractions to your itinerary. Even if you’re not a sports fan, you’ll consider your trip a slam-dunk.
Get your adrenaline fix
Whether you’re young or young at heart, Kennywood Park promises fun and adventure. One of the oldest amusement parks in the country, this National and State Historic Landmark offers three wooden roller coasters, an antique carousel, the Phantom's Revenge steel coaster, the indoor Exterminator, three water rides and 14 Kiddieland rides.
Experience African-American arts and culture
As one of only two major arts institutions worldwide named after Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright August Wilson, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture has an important mission: to connect the history of western Pennsylvania’s African-Americans with people of African descent throughout the world. Through the celebration of black arts, the center—renowned for its sleek architectural design—features exhibition galleries and a 472-seat theater for performances, lectures and hands-on learning. Check their online calendar for a schedule of events.
Discover the treasures inside a Victorian home
Go back in time with a visit to Clayton, the Victorian home of Pittsburgh’s famous industrialist and art collector Henry Clay Frick. Today the restored home is open for tours that tell about the home’s history and give insights into the Frick family's life in the Pittsburgh region. While you’re there, check out The Frick Art Museum to view collections purchased by Henry and his daughter, Helen. Don’t miss the portrait by Rubens, Italian panel paintings by Giovanni di Paolo and a pastoral scene by Boucher.
See Pittsburgh’s roots
Whether or not your family hails from Pittsburgh, there’s a good chance your cultural group is represented in one of the University of Pittsburgh's 30 Nationality Rooms. From Africa to Yugoslavia, every room in the university’s Cathedral of Learning is designed to represent its culture. History and design buffs will appreciate the attention paid to recreating cultural periods, such as Classical, Byzantine, Romanesque and Renaissance. Drop by the Cathedral of Learning and pick up a narrated tour to guide your visit.
Explore the wonders of science
Carnegie Science Center’s four floors feature hundreds of hands-on, interactive exhibits geared toward all ages. See a replica space station, challenge a robot to a game of basketball, visit the world-renowned Miniature Railroad & Village and see the stars in the Buhl Planetarium.
Take a ducky tour
Just Ducky Tours invites you to come along on Pittsburgh’s only fully narrated land and water adventure. Each one-hour excursion launches in historic Station Square before waddling through town and then splashing into the river. There, you’ll take the ride of your life in an authentic WWII amphibious vehicle. Along the way, see the sights and sounds of the city, and learn about its important role in history.
Walk through Randyland
Visit Randyland, one of Pittsburgh’s most colorful landmarks, to explore artist Randy Gilson’s colorful home and courtyard.
On a walk through Pittsburgh’s Northside, it’s hard to miss Randyland, a whimsically designed home with a 40-foot-high mural that includes dinosaurs, butterflies, giant ladybugs, waterfalls, mountains, two moons, a golden castle and doves of peace. Randyland is the home of local artist, Randy Gilson, who opens his courtyard and home daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
