A visit to Carlisle is your chance to experience part of the 46-mile section that passes through Cumberland Valley. Hike out from Carlisle to the midway point of the trail—mile 1,094.5—for a great photo opportunity. Opt for a daytrip along the lowest and flattest 13-mile section in the Valley. It’s one of the most accessible portions in the park and still offers the spirit of Appalachia experience.

2. World Class Fly-Fishing Stream

Cumberland County offers famous fly-fishing territory and flowing streams with premier Class A waters. Enthusiasts return year after year to catch their limit, and you’ll understand why it’s worth the wade once you try it. Float your flies across some of the most popular fly-fishing destinations in the world in Carlisle or neighboring areas. Brave the challenging currents of LeTort Spring Run for the wily trout that inhabit it. Although it's a favorite fishing spot, it's big enough to allow for plenty of elbowroom. 3. An Architectural Icon of Freedom

Take a 30-minute ride to nearby Harrisburg to visit the awe-inspiring Pennsylvania State Capitol. President Teddy Roosevelt declared it "the handsomest building I ever saw" when he dedicated it in 1906, and it’s now protected as a National Historic Landmark. Built in the American Renaissance style, this “Palace of Art” reflects numerous Renaissance design themes throughout. Gaze at the fascinating paintings and stained glass window, as well as the spectacular dome inspired by Michelangelo’s design for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Tours are offered every half hour. 4. Hershey Happenings

Laughter, shrieks and fun await you at Hersheypark, an amusement park owned by the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company of Hershey chocolate bar fame. Only 30 minutes from Carlisle in Hershey, the park offers fun for the whole family. Catapult along roller coasters, glide down water slides and delight in some 70 rides. Older members of the group can enjoy the park’s 13 thrill rides, while the youngsters try out the kids’ rides and chat with life-sized chocolate bar characters. 5. The Turning Point of the Civil War

Relive one of the critical Union victories of the Civil War at the Gettysburg National Military Park, just 30 minutes from Carlisle. The National Park Service Museum and Visitor Center educates all about the historical significance of this site and the Civil War’s bloodiest battle. Let your imagination take you back in time to 1836 as you view the relics of the combat, learn about the personalities of those who played central roles in the Civil War and view multi-media presentations of the battle. Plan a trip to the Pennsylvania Amish countryside, about an hour from Carlisle, where you can climb into a horse-drawn buggy and leave technology behind. You'll be greeted warmly by this community of Amish living a centuries-old lifestyle of calm simplicity.
