While Niagara Falls is often thought of as the “Honeymoon Capital of the World,” the city makes a memorable vacation for the entire family. You'll witness more than 150,000 gallons of water thundering over the edge every second as you stand on the brink of the second-largest waterfall in the world. Now, pack your bags, ditch your social network and get ready to get together with friends and family. Niagara Falls is waiting!
A Cool Climate
You'll find the best time to visit Niagara Falls is during the summer months. Trade the heat of warmer climates for days when the temperature rarely peaks to 80 degrees. Nights dip into the mid-50s during the warmer months, so bring a jacket to guard against the chill. The weather remains temperate through October when days are about 60 degrees. Winters are harsh, so bring plenty of clothing for bundling up. Nights can dip down to below 15 degrees, and days might never get above freezing. If you're not daunted by the cold, you may get to see something visitors in the summer miss out on—dramatic ice formations that measure up to 50 feet thick.
Enjoying the View
You'll obviously want to check out the falls, but there’s more than just one way to admire them. For a closer look, check out the Cave of the Winds tour. You’ll trek through a cave and make your way to a catwalk at the base of the falls, where you’ll experience the true majesty of the roaring waters from a new perspective. Proceed with caution and expect to get soaked. If you're craving a different adrenaline rush, book a jet boat tour to navigate giant rapids and explore the Niagara River at high speeds.
Tourism is Tops
Much of the city’s commerce comes from Niagara Falls popularity as a tourist destination. Major employers include Seneca Niagara Casino and Fashion Outlets of Niagara. Retail, food services and accommodations make up 23 percent of the city's economy. Close behind, manufacturing makes up 21 percent. Some machining factories in the city date back to World War II and got their start making parts for aircrafts and weapons.
Getting Around
You can arrive in the city by plane, train or bus service. You'll have a sweeping view of Lake Ontario and the falls when flying into Niagara Falls International Airport. To get around downtown Niagara, ride the city's trolley system. Check with the front desk of your hotel to get free passes to ride the trolley. You can also transfer to the Metro Rail or Metro Bus from the trolley stops. If you don't pick up a day pass, you can still ride the trolley and other city transit.
