Tucumcari boasts a mild, dry climate, with average yearly temperatures of around 60 degrees. Average yearly temperatures for the month of January, however, are 40 degrees, while July is 80 degrees. You’ll have an enjoyable time here during the summer months if you get an early start each day and drink plenty of water.

Take selfies in front of the life-size murals all over the city, or enjoy poetry readings and a bubble-gum spitting contest at the Nara Visa Cowboy Gathering festival if you’re visiting in September. If you love the great outdoors, go wildlife viewing, boating or fishing at the scenic Tucumcari Lake.

You can savor a taste of locally grown produce and meats at all the farmers markets, shops and restaurants, including the Tucumcari Ranch Supply store (502 South Lake Street). Renewable energy is an up-and-coming player in Tucumcari's economic scene. You'll find multiple wind farms in the city's surrounding areas, and Mesalands Community College hosts a wind energy program boasting the world's tallest classroom.

Getting Here—And There

While Tucumcari has a small municipal airport, it isn't serviced by commercial flights. The city lies almost halfway between Albuquerque and Amarillo, where you can rent a car to complete your journey when you fly into either location. If you’re carless, however, taxi cabs can whisk you around town in a wide-range of smoke-free vehicles.
