Things to Do in Las Cruces

Las Cruces, New Mexico, is hard to miss

The area is dotted with bright, hand-painted water tanks that contrast with the surrounding desert scrub. You'll find an abundance of color in the buildings and more than a little spice in the local foods. The White Sands Missile Range and its museum are nearby, as are hiking trails in the Dripping Springs Natural Area. Come for the clean desert air, the outdoor lifestyle and, of course, for all the delectable food in Las Cruces.

Here a Water Tank, There a Water Tank

You'll probably see the water tanks before you make it into town. This desert community stores its water supply in huge tanks throughout the area. Rather than leave them as big hunks of boring metal, artist Anthony Pennock and his family took it upon themselves to transform them into giant murals. Most of the designs are influenced by Native American artwork from the region, but some show the coming of settlers and local wildlife. Go on a mural hunting expedition with the kids and see how many you can find.

Hiking at Dripping Springs Natural Area

To get out and see the Las Cruces landscape, pack some snacks and water and head for the Dripping Springs Natural Area, about 10 miles from town. You'll find a visitor center, picnic tables, restrooms and 4 miles of easy hiking trails. Walk by desert scrub and cacti, all while doing a bit of bird and wildlife watching. You might see mule deer, coyotes or even a golden eagle. The speedy red-tailed hawk also lives here. Try to hike early in the day before the temperatures soar.

A Little Bit of History at White Sands

Got a technology or history buff in the family? The White Sands Missile Range Museum has exhibits that include a scale model of the first atomic bomb tested at the site. You'll find actual rocket motors, trajectory calculators and, in contrast, an ancient water jug dating back to the 1300s. Outside, Missile Park displays a collection of missiles and rockets tested at White Sands. The museum is about 26 miles from town, roughly a 30-minute drive.

Enchiladas and Belgian Waffles

Adobe walls and bright colors set the tone at La Nueva Casita Cafe (195 N. Mesquite St., Las Cruces). A local favorite since 1957, it serves up specialties like chile relleno omelets for breakfast and a spicy filled chimichanga—sort of a fried burrito—for lunch. For a unique treat, try the fried ice cream for dessert. The Old Mesilla Pastry Cafe, also known as the Shed (810 S. Valley Drive, Las Cruces), will tempt your taste buds with gingerbread pancakes or eggs Benedict with red chili flavored hollandaise sauce. For lunch, try the wood-fired chicken fajita pizza. If you’re craving Belgian waffles, A Bite of Belgium (741 North Almaden Boulevard, #16, Las Cruces) has exactly that. Sample these light, fluffy waffles plain or with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, vanilla custard or lemon mousse. If you're feeling health conscious, get yours with granola and Greek yogurt.
