Fashionistas, take note: there’s a new trendsetter on the scene. No stranger to the clothing world (in the 1930s, the city’s Garment District employed thousands of seamstresses who made clothes worn from coast to coast),Kansas City, Missouri is now hailed as one of the most innovative destinations on the national style map. Here’s your guide to Kansas City shopping so you can navigate this emerging fashion capital.

Find new trends at an old standby

Halls is one of the oldest family-owned department stores in the country, but you’d never know it thanks to its modern vibe and trend-savvy selection. At the century-old mainstay, you’ll find an expertly curated selection of designer clothing and accessories. Another highlight: the 5,000-square-foot beauty department. Wandering through Hall’s sleek displays, you’ll find luxurious made-to-measure collections and world-famous labels, as well as goods from up-and-coming designers. Halls was founded by Joyce C. Hall of Hallmark fame—which also explains the recognizable style of the logo.

Rediscover denim at a sleek, modern retailer

If you like all things denim and are ready to splurge a bit, then you’ll love BALDWIN. Here, the focus is on classic American casual and work wear made with impeccable craftsmanship in the U.S. The label was created by designer Matt Baldwin (co-owner of the successful Kansas City boutique Standard Style), who caught the attention of Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 2015. Baldwin was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund—and in the process, put the spotlight on Kansas City.

Get high fashion with a twist on Main Street

Think of The Garment District’s industrial-chic space as the fashion equivalent of those indie food halls that have popped up in trendy neighborhoods. In the middle of downtown, you’ll find a selection from Kansas City’s top boutiques, pop-ups and designers, all in one place. Need a cocktail to help you decide between two outfits? There’s a bar right in the middle of the store.

Shop apparel and accessories by local Kansas City designers

Named after the eclectic neighborhood it calls home, Westside Storey is all about local pride. Not only will you find plenty of clothes and accessories that pay homage to the city, but you’ll also get to shop from more than 20 Kansas City companies and artists. There’s a great kids selection, too. For a post-shopping pick-me-up, walk a few storefronts over to the French-themed coffeehouse Chez Elle or check out these fun things to do in Kansas City.

Outfit you and your home

You’ll love the relaxed atmosphere at Design in the City—and you might even get fashion advice from Stella, their official boutique dog. Shop labels like Free People and AG Jeans, which are punctuated by unique accessories. If you’re thinking of updating your home decor, you can do that here, too. Just ask the shop’s interior designers for ideas and recommendations. Conveniently, the boutique is located in The Village at Briarcliff, a shopping destination where you can find everything from an independent coffee roaster (Headrush Roasters) to a day spa.

Leave with the perfect souvenir

Intimidated by the usual boutique experience? You’ll love the Kansas City shopping outpost of this Midwest retailer, where all things fun and quirky await you. Raygun specializes in screen-printed tees and goods expressing strong KC pride, along with witty souvenirs and gifts for cat people (seriously, there’s a lot of cat stuff in the collection) and sports fans.
