Five Miles of Beaches: Tybee Island

Often referred to simply as "Savannah's Beach," Tybee Island offers 5 miles of white sand and glimmering blue water. The island's North Beach is closest to Savannah, making it a hotspot for local swimmers and anyone interested in checking out the nearby Tybee Lighthouse. But the larger South Beach also has a few things going for it. It's tailored for family outings, with gentle waves, soft sand and lifeguards. You'll also find colorful shops and restaurants to explore. Head to the adjoining Tybee Pier and Pavilion to cool off with some ice cream and see what the neighborhood anglers are catching.

Tybee Island's Hidden Gems: River Beaches

While most people flock to Tybee’s ocean beaches, there are more hidden gems to be discovered along the calm riverside where sandy shores offer a glimpse of local wildlife, passing ships and sinking sunsets. Tybee Island is cradled between the Savannah River and Tybee Creek, each offering a beach to rival its more famous neighbors. Head to the Savannah River Beach at the north end of the island for a peaceful swim and a chance to spot dolphins playing in the clear water. At the opposite end of the island, Tybee Creek's Back River Beach is home to incredible fishing and jaw-dropping sunsets. No lifeguards are posted, so keep a close eye on youngsters at the river beaches.

Off the Beaten Path: Little Tybee Island

Far from crowds, cars and concession stands sits Little Tybee Island. Set aside as a state nature reserve, Little Tybee Island is uninhabited, yet open to the public. To get there, take one of the local charter boat services over to the island, or just throw your gear into a kayak and paddle across from Back Bay Beach. For families in search of a little adventure, take a dip, watch the local wildlife and soak up the sun far from civilization. Just be sure to respect the island; take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Across the Border: Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island may be in South Carolina, but its gorgeous beaches make it well worth the 45-minute dash across the state line. Ranked among the top 10 family beaches in the country, the Hilton Head coastline stretches for 12 miles and every last inch of it is open to the public. Much of the land adjacent to the beach is privately owned, but the town of Hilton Head Island has wisely set aside nine public access points. If it's your first trip to the island, make a beeline for Coligny Beach Park. There you'll find white sand, rolling waves, shady palms, lifeguards and that rarest of commodities—free parking!
