Things to Do in Pensacola
Pensacola is the westernmost city on Florida's panhandle, and what a treat it is for beach-loving families.
The long ribbons of white sands are protected by offshore barrier islands that keep the ocean tranquil on Pensacola beaches and allow for perfect sunbathing. Dive right into the delightful water, toss a line from the dock, collect shells, build castles—with so much fun at your fingertips, it may be hard to get your gang off the sand, but it's well worth your time to discover Pensacola's other treasures.
Magical Perdido Key
Sugar-white sands, calm, clear azure water, sea oats blowing in the soft breezes. Take your family to paradise— it’s only a short 15-mile drive from Pensacola on fabulous Perdido Key with its 343 days of sunshine every year. Beach play and sunbathing can keep you busy and happy all day, but your clan might also want to kayak, stroll down the wooden boardwalks, dolphin-watch or surf-fish for redfish, pompano, whiting or flounder on this lovely park-island.
Hands-on History
It's not like any museum you've ever seen before. Here at the National Naval Aviation Museum, history is a hands-on adventure. Step into the cockpit of a jet and take it airborne in a flight simulator, explore 150 beautifully restored aircrafts from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Visit during autumn to watch the daredevil Blue Angels practice—if you’re lucky, you may even snag an autograph. Here in November? Check out their Homecoming Show with night-flying aircraft and a fabulous fireworks display.
More Than a Lighthouse
Not every view could make you trudge up 177 stairs, but the panoramic view from the top of the Pensacola Lighthouse is exceptional, offering a vista of Pensacola Pass, where the bay runs into the Gulf of Mexico. You can also admire the city skyline, three forts and the historic Navy Yard. Tour the keeper's old house, which now serves as the museum and displays fascinating pieces of its history. Don't forget the ghosts. According to The Travel Channel and SciFi's Ghost Hunters, this is the most-haunted lighthouse in the nation. Reserve your spot on a 90-minute Ghost Hunt for some spooky fun.
