Things to do in Clearwater
Whether it’s your first family getaway or your eighth trip with the tribe in tow, an escape to this year-round recreation destination will make for a great time
From fishing charters and dolphin-encounter trips to the Busch Gardens theme park close by, this Florida city will win a spot on your must-visit list.
On the Beach
Get away from the hustle and bustle and escape to Clearwater Beach, a barrier island separated from the city by the Intracoastal Waterway. Spend the day kicking back and soaking up the sun or get moving and rent a bike, moped or Segway to cruise along the Beach Walk Promenade. When the sun goes down the pier comes alive for a nightly festival known as Sunsets at Pier 60, which offers a generous helping of local art and entertainment that’s free of charge. For a more low-key option, check out Sand Key Park and explore walking trails and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife.
On the Water
If you’re seeking excitement on the high seas, head to the harbor and choose your own adventure. From sunset cruises to pirate ship voyages, you’re sure to find a trip everyone will love. Take the kids on a thrill ride and hop aboard the Sea Screamer, the world’s largest speedboat. Dive right in and experience marine life up close, and scuba dive throughout artificial reefs scattered with sunken tugboats and WWII tanks.
On Dry Land
The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is home to a number of beloved sea creatures, but the real attraction is Winter, the famous whale without a tail and star of the movie “Dolphin Tale.” After, take to the harbor for Clearwater’s Blast Friday, a family-friendly street festival.
Out For Dinner
Get the full Clearwater experience with fresh seafood and beachfront dining. Head to Crabby’s Bar and Grill, (333 S Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater), for local favorites like the grouper sandwich, served with shark skewers, gator bites and sangria. Jimmy’s Fish House and Iguana Bar (521 S Gulf Blvd., Clearwater) offers live music, a stunning view of the Gulf and on an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet every Friday. If you left the kids at home, head to Nauti-Nancy’s (700 Eldridge St., Clearwater) for more seafood options in a dive bar atmosphere that features live music every night.
