Packing Hacks: How to Save Space in Your Suitcase

Sure, you might have to break some old habits, but packing lighter really can make travel more enjoyable. Here are some smart space-saving tips to help you pack lean and light for your next trip.

A Ban on Bulky

Big fluffy bathrobes, winter boots and heavy overcoats are major suitcase space hogs. Eliminate any of these bulky items that aren't absolutely necessary for your trip. Do you really need a big winter coat where you're going? If yes, then wear it while you travel instead of trying to pack it—same goes with scarves and boots. Hard-shelled eyeglass cases are perfect for packing cotton swabs, make-up brushes and tweezers. And of course, you’ll want to opt for travel-sized toothpaste, shampoo, mouthwash and other essentials. Remember, these travel containers must be 3.4 ounces or less and need to be placed in a 1-quart re-sealable bag to comply with TSA regulations.

Roll it or Fold it?

Rolling your shirts, pants and other items lets you maximize your suitcase space. As a bonus, rolled clothes don’t wrinkle so you won’t have to worry about ironing on the go. Pants should be rolled separately, but some swear that it’s best to fold each pair lengthwise, stack and then roll them all together. If you travel with blazers or suit jackets, turn them inside out and cross at the arms before folding to reduce wrinkles. And don’t’ forget to roll your dirty clothes as well so that everything fits on your return trip.

Stuffing and Stuffables

Shoes are the trickiest items to pack in small spaces. For starters, aim to travel with just three pairs, including dress shoes, tennis shoes and flats if you need them. Don’t bother with slippers, flip-flops can do double-duty. You can also use the empty space inside each shoe for small items, including rolled-up undies, socks and scarves. If you happen to have delicate items, you can put them inside socks and place them inside a shoe for extra protection. Save even more space, and protect the shape of bras by stacking them on top of each other, putting small items like tank tops or socks inside.

Those Pesky Extras

Umbrellas, phone chargers and gifts can be particularly awkward to pack when you're trying to be economical with space. Fortunately, the side pockets in your suitcases are made for these items, making it easy to carry small, odd or easy to lose items. You can also put electronic accessories inside the spare shoes you pack. As for gifts, you can skip the packing altogether by mailing them home. And forget about packing guidebooks, just bookmark travel sites and maps on your phone so you have them on the go.

Now that you’ve cut some corners and assembled your must-have items, you still face one final obstacle – packing it all! You can optimize your space by snaking your belt around the inside of your suitcase and packing your shoes, heels side facing the outside, against it. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s time to stuff the inside of your shoes. Next you’ll want to pack your rolled-up shirts and sweaters, followed by your pants. Remember to fill in the empty spaces with rolled up scarves, ties and other small items.Finally, place the clear plastic 1-quart resealable bag of your liquid products on top of everything so it's easily accessible for TSA inspection.
