Presidents Day not only offers a much appreciated long weekend, but it's also a chance to look back at those who have lead our country through the years. The holiday takes place on the third Monday of February to commemorate the birthday of George Washington. If you're looking for destinations that offer fun and historical significance, be sure to keep these top Presidents Day weekend getaways in mind.
The city of Philadelphia served as our nation's capital until 1800. Both George Washington and John Adams served part of their terms here, and the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both drafted and signed here. Naturally, spending the holiday weekend in Philadelphia is the ideal way to celebrate Presidents Day in style. The National Constitution Center and Valley Forge National Historic Park are great places to learn more about the American Revolution and our founding fathers. For an added treat, visit the President’s House Site, a fun, outdoor exhibit where you can explore the structural footprint of rooms where Presidents Washington and Adams once lived and worked with their families.
It's a town where historical reenactments are a daily occurrence, but planning a trip to Williamsburg will show you just how all-out this town goes for Presidents Day weekend. A visit to Colonial Williamsburg is an immersive experience with old-fashioned shops, restaurants, bakeries and taverns up and down the city streets, as well as 18th century-inspired performances daily. Presidents Day celebrations in Williamsburg often include appearances by reenactors portraying the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison—you never know who you’ll see.
What better choice for Presidents Day weekend than a getaway to Washington, D.C.? Our nation's capital is home to numerous sites that commemorate U.S. presidents—the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial to name just a few. Walking along the Washington Mall is the best way to capture your own collection of selfies in front of many of the major memorials. You can finish your tour at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool surrounded by the very same trees that bloom into bright pink and white clusters during cherry blossom season.
Boston has been home to a surprising number of U.S. presidents. Both Teddy Roosevelt to Barack Obama lived in the Boston area while studying at Harvard Law. The house where John Adams was born is located in the John Adams National Historical Park, just a short drive from the city. John F. Kennedy's childhood home is now the John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site. To experience a historic-focused Boston trip, follow the Freedom Trail to dozens of well-preserved Revolutionary War-era landmarks like the Bunker Hill Monument and the Benjamin Franklin Statue—not a president, but an influential founding father all the same.
