Virginia Beach is an oceanfront jewel of entertainment and relaxation
The state’s slogan is “Virginia is for Lovers,” and what’s more romantic than a great beach vacation? Virginia Beach is an oceanfront jewel of family-friendly entertainment, vibrant nightlife and seaside relaxation. Stroll the legendary Virginia Beach Boardwalk, build a sandcastle, test your skill at water sports or explore the shore’s natural wonders. There are so many things to do in Virginia Beach—you’ll soon find out why this seaside city beckons vacationers year after year.
The Boardwalk and Beyond
Take a leisurely walk down the three-mile-long boardwalk. Enjoy the view of the beach on one side and restaurants, shops and entertainment on the other. Pull out your smartphone to snap a selfie with the gigantic statue of King Neptune on 31st Street. You can also make a stop at the oceanfront home of 19th century mystic Edgar Cayce, which is now the headquarters for Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment. A tour of the property includes a visit to the library, health center, café and meditation spaces. Visitors can catch a free film, followed by a tour, daily at 2 p.m.
If you want to learn about life beneath the ocean waves, go on an underwater journey at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. You’ll learn about hundreds of sea creatures from the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Traveling with kids? Download the free “Soak It Up” app for an interactive kids’ guide to the aquarium.
For even more fun in the sun, head to Ocean Breeze Waterpark to splash, swim and plunge down water slides, a tubing river, and a million-gallon wave pool in this sprawling waterpark with more than 30 rides. Want a more tranquil outing? First Landing State Park is home to magnificent bald cypress tree swamps, native wildlife and beautiful beaches on the Chesapeake Bay.
Fly High with Local History
Many attractions in Virginia Beach are rich in history. Completed in 1792, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was authorized by George Washington, and its construction was overseen by Alexander Hamilton. You can climb up to the top of the structure and take in a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and the mighty ships of the Virginia Waterways. Be sure to have your ID ready and expect a car inspection, since the lighthouse is located on military property.
If you have an interest in military aircraft, plan a trip to the Military Aviation Museum. It features four hangars with restored World War I and World War II aircraft. You can even purchase a ride in select planes for a memorable experience.
