Creature Comforts
Seeing rare, interesting and adorable animals is fun for kids of all ages. Go to the Houston Zoo if you want to walk on the wild side with lions, tigers, cheetahs, chimpanzees and other animals from around the world. You can even buy giraffe food and feed it to the gentle giants during their twice-daily feedings. To spot even more animals, visit the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. In addition to offering swimming pools, running trails, golf and playgrounds, it’s also a wildlife sanctuary.
To get up close to marine life, head to the Downtown Aquarium and Restaurant. You’ll find food and fun! Dine underwater, see six different exhibits and enjoy amusement park rides. You can even take a train ride through a 200,000-gallon shark tank.
Ready For Takeoff
You won’t want to miss the opportunity to visit Space Center Houston. See mission control and real rockets, touch moon rocks, and even board a space shuttle carrier plane. And, if you buy tickets online, you get a $5 discount on admission. Houston’s baseball team also pays tribute to the city’s contributions to space exploration through its team name, the Houston Astros. Take a trip to Minute Maid Park to catch a game—or a stadium tour.
For indoor activities, you can’t beat the Children’s Museum of Houston and The Galleria. The museum features hands-on exhibits that are entertaining and educational. If you go on Thursday from 5-8 p.m., families can get in free! The Galleria offers around 400 stores and eateries, but that’s not all. Lace up your ice skates and take a twirl on the mall’s indoor rink—it’s open year-round.
