What Winter?

If you love being outdoors, Sacramento's mild winters and dry, sunny summers offer the ideal climate for adventure. Just remember to bring your sunscreen—from June through September, the skies are typically clear and high temperatures range from the mid-80s to just above 90. During the long spring and autumn seasons, temperatures are generally a comfortable 50 to 60 degrees, but bring a jacket in case of occasional rainfall and cool breezes. Winter temperatures hover near 40 degrees, accented by a few days of moderate rainfall.

Gold Mines on the Gold Coast

Glimpse the past in Old Sacramento, a State Historic Park and National Historic Landmark where gold miners, railroad barons and shopkeepers battled the elements to create a new city in the Wild West. A few blocks away, explore the California capitol building, where legislators have guided the Golden State into a thoroughly modern age. Keep things lively with a few hours at amusement parks or trendy boutiques and galleries downtown. When you're ready for a dose of nature, stroll, hike or bike a portion of the American River Parkway. This 23-mile stretch of protected riverside land leads out into Gold Country and is populated with native plants and wildlife.

Government, Tech and Clean Energy

The state of California, Sacramento County and city government offices are significant employers in the city. But major public and private corporations in the fields of information technology, food technology and biotechnology put Sacramento on the cutting edge of science. Strong ties with local educational institutions, the University of California, and organizations such as the California Energy Collaborative and the Energy Efficiency Center bolster Sacramento's role as a leader in clean energy technology. Sacramento holds the title of fourth-strongest clean tech hub in the nation.

A Central Destination

Interstate 5, the major north-south freeway in the western United States, passes through the center of Sacramento, with numerous exits to downtown and neighborhoods. If you're traveling east or west on Interstate 80, Sacramento is just about midway between Reno, Nevada and San Francisco. A dozen different airlines fly in and out of Sacramento International Airport, where you can rent a car, take a cab, or hop on a shuttle to downtown destinations. Three major Amtrak train lines—the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight and the Capital Corridor—make stops at the Sacramento station. Light rail and bus routes operated by Sacramento Regional Transit District provide efficient transportation throughout the greater metropolitan area as well.
