Know Before You Go: About Ontario
The sunshine that once made Ontario a happy home for citrus groves helps earn it major points as a delightful getaway destination
Families gather here to frolic in the lovely, warm weather—the average temperature is 83 degrees—and to enjoy easy access to all of the wonders of Southern California.
Center of Southern California
Venice Beach, the San Bernardino Mountains, Disneyland, Hollywood, Dodger Stadium, Santa Monica—so much fun and adventure is packed within an hour's drive from centrally located Ontario. But the town itself beckons too. Enjoy concerts or watch ruthless hockey at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, the region’s largest entertainment venue. Or dive into retail therapy at its finest in the 1.7-million square foot Ontario Mills Mall, where brand-name stores snuggle up to movie theaters and oodles of eateries.
No Umbrellas Required
Ontario’s changes in temperature between seasons are relatively small. Summers are typically humid, with monthly averages over 80 degrees from June through September. Average temperatures only dep below 60 degrees around December. Overall, the region offers around 279 days of sunshine and only 15 inches worth of rainfall annually.
From Citrus Fields to Business Parks
You won't see the fields of orange trees in Ontario that you might expect. Although the town once boasted a thriving citrus business, today you'll find that mixed-use neighborhoods and business parks occupy those fields instead. Most people in the area work in sales or administrative support, while others typically make a living in management, business or finance.
Easy to Reach Ontario
There are numerous ways of getting to Ontario, but once you're here, you're pretty much on your own getting around. Fly right into the LA/Ontario International Airport and it’s an easy taxi ride from your hotel. Another option is to travel on Amtrak or by car on Interstates 10 or 15 or State Routes 83 or 60 (the Pomona Freeway). You can also travel to other parts of the Greater Los Angeles area by Metrolink, and get around Ontario by public buses, but a rental car will give your family greater convenience and options.
