Things to Do in Eureka
Even if you only have time for an afternoon getaway, you’ll find plenty of exciting places to explore in beautiful Humboldt County.
Outdoor activities abound on the gorgeous shores of the Humboldt Bay.
The redwood forests and Pacific coastline are sure to inspire your family to get out and play in the beautiful landscapes of this Northern California region. You'll build unforgettable memories hiking, biking, paddling, agate hunting and reveling in nature's wonderland in and around Eureka.
Towering redwood splendor
You'll never forget standing in the shadows of the tallest living things on earth.
Forests of coastal redwoods—the tallest living things on earth—covered the West Coast a century ago, but most of them were chopped for lumber. Many of the remaining redwoods are protected in parks within a two-hour drive of hotels in Eureka. Hop in the car and go! Pay a visit to Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park to the north or any section of the Redwoods National Forest for an afternoon to remember.
Old Town Eureka
Historic homes and Victorian-era buildings make Old Town a history buff's dream destination.
The rich history of Eureka is so well-preserved in the community’s Old Town district on the waterfront that the city has been officially declared the 477th California Historical Landmark. Take a walk to tour the area and take in the sights of the Victorian-era buildings and explore the dozens of eclectic shops, bookstores, art galleries and inviting restaurants. Make sure to check out Old Town’s Carson Mansion while you’re here for an amazing illustration of Queen Anne Style architecture.
The Redwood Discovery Museum
Spend a day full of family-freindly learning (and fun) at Eureka's premier attraction.
You may never get your kids out of Eureka's Redwood Discovery Museum. It's filled with hands-on exhibits that fascinate all age groups, such as the S.S. Discovery, where your child can interact with a 20-foot-tall ship. There’s also an animation station where kids can design their own cartoon and a grocery store where kids can pretend to shop for produce and total their purchases.
Explore the Lost Coast
There's no better way to experience the majestic beauty of the Humboldt Bay area than on a picturesque hike.
If you’re an avid hiker, the Lost Coast Trail has to be on your bucket list. It's 24.8 miles of what may be the most spectacular beach trail in the world, located in the pristine King Range National Conservation Area. The Lost Coast is just south of Eureka, and the trail runs from Mattole Beach to Shelter Cove. Although the trail is largely flat, it can prove challenging, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
Head down to Trinidad
Prime fishing conditions, beautiful trails and a charming art scene await in nearby Trinidad.
Adventure some 20 miles north of Eureka to explore a delightful little fishing town and art colony called Trinidad. The town starts on the top of the bluff—where the views of the waterfront below make for compelling photos—and spills down the hill to the harbor. Dozens of brightly colored boats bobble in the blue waters of Trinidad Bay, and you might see seals and even whales. Park your car and head up the well-maintained trail to Trinidad Head, a rocky rise offering terrific views up and down the coastline. When you get back down, treat your clan to the catch of the day at the little restaurant on the pier.
Picnicking, kayaking and treasure hunts
Take your family on your own personal treasure hunt for colorful agates on the beach.
Located just a few miles north of Trinidad off Highway 101, Big Lagoon is chock-full of big surprises. You'll discover a small county park perched right on the shores of a calm lagoon. Search the world over, you most likely will not find a better picnic place than the Big Lagoon day-use area—with barbecues, picnic tables and spectacular views of the water. Rent a kayak and paddle off into still waters. Or head to the beach to gather agates that wash up on shore—just make sure to watch out for the strong riptides.
