Find Fun on Lake Powell

Begin your excursions around Page with a trip to Lake Powell, the man-made reservoir centerpiece of the iconic Glen Canyon Recreation Area. Kayak, fish or water-ski with magnificent pink and orange sandstone cliffs on either side. Hike the lake paths or the 8-mile Loop-and-Rim Trail that encircles Page. Ease back and take the family sightseeing on a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam. You’ll find videos, Navajo artifacts and kid-themed activities in the Visitors Center, followed by a 528-foot elevator descent into the interior of the dam.

Hoof it at Horseshoe Bend

This vacation, you’ll be gazing wide-eyed at nature's spectacular marvels, though getting to them might give you a bit of a workout. Horseshoe Bend is a rock formation encircled by a big loop in the Colorado River, but the only way to snap that perfect picture of it is to climb a 3/4-mile trail to a cliff 1,000 feet above the river. It's an unforgettable view—and a sheer drop with no guardrail—so keep a sharp eye on small or extra-curious kids. The entry to the overlook is on U.S. Highway 89, about 5 miles south of the Glen Canyon Dam.

Antelope Canyon is sacred space, a skinny sandstone canyon with salmon-colored walls. You can view it on a guided tour that leaves from Page or drive to the canyon and pay an entry fee to the Navajo Nation land. Upper and Lower Antelope, adjacent slot canyons, require a guide who will point out features you might have missed, tell the history of the region and position you for the best photos—beams of sunlight piercing the shadows and illuminating the colored walls. Venture elsewhere on rainy days, as the area is prone to deadly flash floods.

Discover Rainbow Bridge National Monument

Get to the world's largest natural bridge by boat or on foot. Rainbow Bridge is a 275-foot sandstone span carved thousands of years ago by water and wind, and continues to be naturally carved today. Six-hour tours (boxed lunch included) leave from a Lake Powell Marina and motor through awe-inspiring scenery along the way. Drought-induced low water levels can mean a mile or so hike from the dock to the natural arch, so wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. Or just hike in the whole way for a real workout. It's a 14-mile trail each way and requires a Navajo Nation hiking permit. You can no longer climb on the bridge, but you can look for the lone, three-toed Dilophosaurus footprint close to the viewing area.
