Oklahoma Travel Guide

Find Hidden Treasure in the Sooner State

In 1889, Americans were so excited to move to Oklahoma during the great “Land Rush” that some folks jumped the gun and staked their claim to the free plots of land too soon. Those “Sooners” saw a good thing—and couldn’t wait to start their adventures here. Today, Oklahoma hotels aren’t free, but they’re much easier to come by when you want to stake out your own adventure on the Great Plains.

Things to do in Oklahoma

Art and Architecture

You’ll see working derricks and graphic designs of derricks almost everywhere in Tulsa. You’ll also find beautifully maintained Art Deco architecture in the Deco District together with world-class museums, like the Philbrook Museum of Art, which is the former estate of oil baron Waite Phillips. Plus you’ll find the world’s largest collection of Western American art, along with Native American art and artifacts, at the Gilcrease Museum. All these attractions are easy to find when staying at one of our Tulsa hotels.

Modern Cowboys

Head to Oklahoma City’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, where the Old West comes alive through interactive displays and priceless works of art. If you happen to be in town on a Monday or Tuesday, you can view today’s cowboys and cowgirls wrangling and bidding on cattle at the Stockyard City Auction House. Horse shows also dot the local event calendar here in OKC.

Go Native

There are more Native Americans living here than in any other U.S. state, with a quarter-million American Indians descended from 67 tribes. A must-see Oklahoma attraction is the Spiro Mounds near the Arkansas River at the eastern border of the state. This 140-acre site encompasses 12 mounds holding artifacts from as long ago as the ninth century. In the southwestern part of the state, visit Anadarko, in the Washita River Valley, where you’ll find the only authentic Indian City in the U.S.
