What Your Nightcap Says About Your Job

We reveal the best drink orders for every work trip scenario

Bypass the booze and instead opt for a mocktail when saluting a big road win with your boss.

There are few things more rewarding at the end of a long workday than a proper nightcap. And when you’re working away from the home office—adding extra baggage to the daily grind—those sips are even sweeter. But because a cocktail menu can sometimes be more overwhelming than your inbox, we turned to Natalie Migliarini, the founder of Beautiful Booze (a blog wholly devoted to the art of drinking well) for her tips on what celebratory drinks to order.

Toasting with your boss? Try a mocktail

No matter how epic the victory, there are times when you need to keep it professional and keep your wits about you. For those moments, Migliarini recommends ordering a nonalcoholic drink, like the Molly Muleshaken that’s on the menu at our restaurant and bar in Phoenix. The drink is zippy enough—it’s a blend of ginger beer, raspberry and lime—to keep you engaged, but free from booze so you “can make a good impression, while still having fun and looking like a sensible a team player.”

If you rose to the occasion during that client meeting, go for the bubbly and celebrate with some champagne.

Nailed it? Pop some champagne

Whether you aced an interview, a client meeting or a big presentation, there are some work wins that simply require an extra-special celebration. “Champagne elevates everything, so indulging in a bottle after a well-received presentation really takes it to the next level,” says Migliarini. “It begins with that fun pop, before you watch those bubbles rise … just like you did at work.” At Chazz Palminteri Italian Restaurant in New York, the extensive wine menu features approximately 250 bottles from all over the globe, including some terrific champagnes.

You beat the clock for that important deadline. Now ease into a mezcal-based cocktail for a more relaxed pace.

Met a big deadline? Make it mezcal

We all deal with deadlines every day, but meeting a particularly big one calls for a mezcal-based cocktail. Why? “The burn on that first sip goes from your tongue to your stomach and warms your body all over–telling you it’s finally time to relax a little,” suggests Migliarini. The Segundo a Nada at the bar and lounge in Los Angeles is a bracing but balanced cocktail with mezcal, watermelon, lime and jalapeno and will quickly take the edge off a stressful situation.

After conquering a full day of meetings in a new place, treat yourself to a local craft brew and take a moment to enjoy your destination.

Arrived to all your meetings on time? Order a local brew

We think even the smallest victories deserve celebratory drinks. When a workday—especially a day when you’re in a new, unfamiliar city—is packed with meetings, it feels good knowing you navigated the turf like a local and got to all your obligations on time. Once you’ve clocked out, celebrate your moxie and the city you’re visiting with a local beer.

Helped bring in some new business? Celebrate by going first class with a whiskey flight.

Brought in some big bucks? Splurge on a whiskey flight

Scoring more business for your company is another occasion that calls for a first-rate celebration. “A major splurge is necessary, because let’s be honest, we can’t be certain when the next win will come.” Migliarini’s go-to orders in moments like these are whiskey flights, because they allow you to sample an array of whiskeys from around the globe. At our bistro and bar in New Orleans, we’re serving four curated flights, including one featuring a Japanese whisky, which Migliarini considers to be “the ultimate indulgence.”
