Gold was discovered in the area in 1848 and while Auburn wasn’t a major site for gold mining, it served as an important trading and supply post for the prime gold fields nearby. When the railroad depot arrived in1865, the city also became a transportation hub. You can stroll through the streets of Old Town Auburn to see historic structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
